A LAW which means it is an offence for mothers to be prevented from breastfeeding in public is not a "licence for exhibitionism".
That's the view of Rushen MHK Juan Watterson following the announcement of Royal Assent in Tynwald of the Breastfeeding Act yesterday (Tuesday).
Mr Watterson, who moved the bill through Tynwald, said: "I hope this Act of Tynwald will encourage more mothers to breastfeed their child without the stigma of being asked to leave public places such as cafes and restaurants.
"This is not a license for exhibitionism as some have suggested, and it is unlikely that anyone abusing the privilege will be able to make a claim, but this act is a big step into demonstrating that breastfeeding is a normal part of being a mother."
Failure to comply with this law can open the door to damage claims which can reach up to £2,500.
