Police hunt for "despicable" thief who stole Poppy Appeal collection

by isleofman.com 15th November 2011

POLICE are appealing for information after what they call a despicable and callous theft from Braddan Church.

Between 9am on Thursday, November 10 and 12pm on Saturday, November 12, someone stole a Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal charity collection box.

Inspector Mark Britton from the Eastern Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "This is a deplorable act and one which leaves me feeling sick to the pit of my stomach.

"This person needs to look to themselves and what they have done - those who have given their lives so others can be free - it is atrocious."

Reverend Frear from Braddan Church said it was hard to tell how much money was in the collection box because it had been in the church for some time for people to leave a donation in return for a poppy.

He said the "centre of anger" around the theft was the timing and said it was possible the thief had taken the collection on Armistice Day itself.

PC Bryn Griffith who is investigating this incident said: "This was a despicable and callous theft. I cannot understand why someone would commit such a terrible act. It is obvious that the person who has done this has no respect.

"I would urge any person who has knowledge of this incident to inform the police. This can be done by calling the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111 if they wish to remain anonymous."

Reverend Frear added: "If someone has a conscience and it was to reappear say in the back of the church that would go some way to making amends."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Onchan Police Station on 01624 675190.
