THE Mountain Road - which was closed following a landslip yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon - has now been re-opened.
50 tonnes of soil had to be removed.
A statement from the Department of Infrastructure (DoI) said there was 'horrendous driving conditions' yesterday.
"Visibility was so poor that the road closure was extended beyond the immediate area of the landslip on the Mountain Mile to the Hairpin and the Creg Ny Baa because of fears that emergency vehicles would be hit by speeding cars, despite flashing lights being used.
"The stability of the slip was reviewed this morning and in the region of 50 tonnes of soil had impinged on the carriageway.
"This has now been taken away in a series of lorry movements as the slip was cleared using DoI diggers."
Engineer Gary Saunders said: "The slip was caused by the recent heavy rainfall penetrating the surface and destabilising the soil above the road.
"Though only a minor slip, the consequences of a car swerving at high speed to avoid it could have been catastrophic."
The Mountain Road was reopened at noon today.
