More action against 'legal high' drugs

by isleofman.com 10th November 2011

The Manx government's drug advisers are to explore the sale, supply and impact of so-called 'legal highs', before making recommendations to politicians.

That's been confirmed by the Department of Health, after the coroner of inquests called for the drug MDAI to be banned, following the death of a Ramsey teenager.

Tanya Hughes, 17, died after taking what is currently a legal substance.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs believes stricter laws, more research and greater awareness are all needed to curb the spread of such drugs.

The department's director of healthcare delivery, Norman McGregor Edwards, says government wants to do all it can to combat the dangers, and introduce more legislation to protect young people.
