Manx National Heritage to mark Royal British Legion anniversary

by isleofman.com 8th November 2011

A SERIES of events are taking place at Manx National Heritage's iMuseum in Douglas this week to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.

On Thursday (November 10), at 10am until 11am, Manx National Heritage curator Matthew Richardson will explore 'Voices from Dunkirk' - the role of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and its crews in the evacuation of Dunkirk in the Second World War.

In May and June 1940 the survivors of the British army, which had been shattered by the German blitzkrieg, made their way to the French channel coast hoping for rescue.

Among the civilian ships mobilised to save them were those of the Steam Packet.

Bravely its crews ventured into the burning port, time and again, to save as many men as they could.

The event is free and donations are welcome to the Poppy Appeal.

On Saturday there will be a Poppy art workshop at the iMuseum.

Manx National Heritage is working alongside the Royal British Legion and Mannin Art Group so visitors can create an individual art piece and contribute to a collaborative silk painting to display in the iMuseum.

Admission is a £3 donation to the Poppy Appeal.

It takes place between 10am and midday and no booking is required.

At 2pm to 3pm, also on Saturday, Manx National Heritage assistant curator Hannah Gerrard presents 'Lest we Forget: Memorials and their Meanings'.

It is a chance for people to learn the history of Remembrance Day and explore international memorials and their meanings.

Hannah will also focus on a selection of Manx memorials, including the artistic influence of Archibald Knox.

Admission is free – donations are welcome to the Poppy Appeal.

At the iMuseum people can discover military history and search newspapers for stories reported from war time.

The iMuseum also holds war memorial records for Douglas and the Island's parishes, including the names of the individuals commemorated.

Members of the public can see photographs of war memorials from the National Archive and explore museum collections within the Island at War topic.

Places are limited for the talks so people should arrive early to avoid disappointment.
