THE Department of Infrastructure will research into the possibility of introducing Park and Ride schemes in the Isle of Man.
It says this is one idea that has stemmed from a consultation and review of on and off street parking in the Island which was carried out between February 25 and April 8 this year.
61 per cent of respondents who filled in the online survey said they would use Park and Ride services if they offered a cost saving compared to car parking charges.
The department has said the survey highlighted a number of issues and suggestions for further development and that it would look to develop a policy and parking strategy.
Infrastructure Minister David Cretney said: "The consultation results will help the department formulate a policy and parking strategy that meets the needs of the public in a cost effective way.
"The response from all parties was excellent with a wide range of views and opinions expressed.
"Developing additional car parking has cost implications and the constructive responses along with an ongoing programme of detailed parking surveys will help target this investment to the areas of greatest demand."
Results from the consultation show that the public feel Douglas has the most need for extra parking and that a large number of people still wish to see the removal of large vehicles from residential roads. It also showed that people feel parking needs to be better policed and that there are enough disabled spaces.
The Department of Infrastructure will now consult with local authorities over street parking development including parking areas for large vehicles and commercial vehicles and would "endeavour to ensure that illegal parking is policed and enforced to a higher level".
It said it will also work in consultation with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure to confirm the "viability and cost effectiveness" of introducing a Park and Ride scheme and with Bus Vannin to support the provision of public transport.
