Bishop Robert is expressing great sadness and surprise at the resignation of his immediate predecessor, from the position of Dean of St Paul's Cathedral.
In a media statement yesterday (Monday), the Right Reverend Graeme Knowles said mounting criticism of the cathedral's handling of the anti-capitalist protest camp outside the famous building had made his position untenable.
Bishop Robert says he has great sympathy for the former Dean, who found himself in an extraordinary situation, with little to guide him.
And he recognises the closure of St Paul's to the public for the first time since World War II, because of the protest camp, didn't help the Anglican Church's position (listen to audio file below):
Graeme Knowles was Bishop of the Isle of Man for four years, up to 2007.
