Advocate backs 'two strikes' sentencing

There are no immediate plans to introduce mandatory life terms for repeat offenders in the Isle of Man.

Under new proposals in the United Kingdom, criminals found guilty of offences which carry sentences of ten or more years could face life in jail if they were convicted of such an offence for a second time.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke says the move would 'bring back common sense into sentencing'.

The 'two strikes' policy would apply to serious sexual or violent crimes.

Director at Simcocks Advocates Kevin O'Riordan believes the policy would make members of the public feel they were getting better protection, and go some way to reducing over crowding in prisons.

While the idea is not being considered on the Island yet, Mr O'Riordan feels the UK is doing the right thing:
