Fire officer confirms blanket caused blaze

Fire chiefs in the Isle of Man are urging people who use electric blankets to get them checked before winter sets in.

The warning comes as investigations continue into the cause of a bedroom fire in Onchan.

Firefighters rescued an elderly woman from the ground floor of her property in Ridgeway Road last night, and she has been recovering in hospital after being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The woman wasn't aware of the fire at first and station officer Carl Kinvig of the Fire and Rescue Service, says an electric blanket that was left switched on, was to blame:
