GEOFF Corkish has been elected as the deputy speaker of the House of Keys.
The Douglas West MHK went up against Douglas East MHK Brenda Cannell at a sitting of the House of Keys this morning (Tuesday).
Mr Corkish pipped Mrs Cannell to the position with 11 votes to her 10.
He was nominated by fellow Douglas West MHK John Shimmin who said he was "suitably qualified and experienced" to take up the role.
He was seconded by Onchan MHK David Quirk.
Mrs Cannell was nominated by Onchan MHK Peter Karran who said he "believed there was no one more suitable" for the role and said Mrs Cannell was "passionate about parliamentary procedures".
She was seconded by Douglas North MHK John Houghton who said he felt she was "clearly the right person to deputise" in the honourable house.
21 votes were cast in total as Rushen MHK Laurence Skelly, Middle MHK Howard Quayle and Douglas North MHK Bill Henderson were all absent.
