Hero to be remembered on Trafalgar Day

by isleofman.com 20th October 2011

The naval ties that link Arbory Church and the village's school with Captain John Quilliam of Trafalgar fame will be marked tomorrow (Friday).

Pupils will lay wreaths on the tomb of the naval hero, a first lieutenant on Nelson's ship the Victory at Trafalgar, who is buried in the churchyard.

Trafalgar Day will also be marked with the Quilliam lecture in Arbory Church, addressed by a professor of Naval History.

Church warden Phil Smith hopes it will help raise funds for a project to commission a stained glass window at the church dedicated to Captain Quilliam's heroics (listen to audio file below):

The lecture at Abory Church is at 7.30pm for a 7.45pm start.
