Tributes to retiring Chief Minister

by isleofman.com 18th October 2011

FORMER Chief Minister Tony Brown has been praised for playing a key role in the success of the Isle of Man’s economy and its rapid growth over three decades.

In Tynwald this morning the new President, Claire Christian, chose the first sitting of the chamber to pay tribute to Mr Brown’s 30 years as a national politician, latterly for the past five years as Chief Minister.

“Mr Brown always represented the Isle of Man with confidence and skill while holding many varied roles within government and whilst representing the Island both nationally and internationally.”

She said that Mr Brown’s particular interest in the constitution and especially parliamentary procedures had been of major benefit to both Tynwald and the House of Keys, where he was the Speaker for 10 years.

Mrs Christian added, “Mr Brown was affable, approachable and a people person and had a great sense of community spirit, taking an interest in politics from a very early age.

“He has been a key player in the success of the Isle of Man for many years. He is a proud Manxman and he should be very proud of his record of service.”
