Radio presenter admits drink-driving

by isleofman.com 11th October 2011

A Manx Radio presenter has appeared in court charged with drink-driving.

Bernie Quayle was arrested in Derby Road in Douglas shortly after 8pm last night (Monday) after police saw him run a red light.

The 70 year-old appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes this morning when he admitted the offence.

The court heard he’d failed a roadside sobriety test and gave a breath test reading of 119 at police headquarters. The legal limit is 80.

Representing himself, the defendant said he’d drunk brandy with his evening meal and had driven to a shop to buy groceries.

The court heard he was disappointed that, with no previous convictions, he’d lost his good character at the age of 70.

The Deputy High Bailiff said she would give him credit for his immediate guilty plea and co-operation with police.

He was fined ?800, disqualified from driving for 15 months, and ordered to pay ?154 costs.
