Morning Report

The FTSE 100 is up 0.68%, nudging a touch higher but staying within a tight range Monday. Bank stocks are  negative, with investors unable to be too positive about the announcement from Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy that a banks recapitalization plan is in the pipeline.

The miners have registered modest losses, with Antofagasta, Kazakhmys, Eurasian Natural Resources Corp, Xstrata and Randgold Resources in the red.

Premier Foods is among the top performers on the FTSE 250, as its share price attempts to recover from Friday's sell-off. Despite this morning's moderate rise, shares are still nearly 40% lower over the last week.

Premier Oil rose strongly after saying that oil production has started at the Chim Sáo field in Block 12W, offshore Vietnam.

Heading the other way was recruitment firm Michael Page International, despite gross profits rising 26.5%, as gross profits from the UK rose by just 0.03% in the third quarter. THE FTSE 100 at 10:00                    Up          36       @         5339
