WHAT sounds like a bizarre mixture is proving to be a massive hit amongst foodies - mushroom ice cream!
The product was revealed at the recent Isle of Man Food & Drink Festival and now local restaurants are planning to use it on their menus.
The ice cream is the result of a joint project between Greeba Farm’s Manx grown mushrooms and Davison’s Manx dairy ice cream.
It was a surprise hit at the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival, held in the Nunnery gardens when supplies were sold out in no time.
“It was phenomenal,” said Kathy Irwin of Greeba Farms. “Visitors were flocking to our Manx Mushroom Experience tent demanding more ice cream. We ran out of supplies on Sunday afternoon, a staggering seven gallons having been consumed over the weekend!”
The creamy blend of Manx milk and cream with Greeba Farm’s chestnut mushrooms produced what Ian Davison described as a “spectacular frozen rich mushroom desert”. The idea to create a Manx made mushroom ice cream had started as a bit of a joke but once a sample batch had been whipped up, both local food producers realised they were on to a winner.
Kathy Irwin added, “The final product was proof that using top quality ingredients in innovative ways demonstrates their versatility. It was a subtle combination of flavours that many people commented should not have worked, but just did.”
Several local restaurants are now considering how they can include Manx mushroom ice cream to their menus and the Davison’s ice cream parlours are stocking up for October too.
