ALF Cannan has kept the Michael seat in the family after winning a seat in the constituency.
He will take over the responsibility for MHK from his father David Cannan – a long time Michael MHK who retired this year.
Alf took the seat comfortably with 1,014 votes cast in his favour. Second place went to David Talbot who polled 325 votes and third place went to Paul Heavey who took 244 votes.
Speaking after the announcement was made Alf outlined his priorities going forward.
He said: "The message I take to government is clear – firm leadership, a clear plan and an open and honest government are clear fundamentals for going forward.
"We must cut bureaucracy, red tape and must go forward as one community and one nation together.
"I will work hard for this community and fully support community life. There are no easy solutions and now it is time to work together to ensure future success."
