Heywood Datacentre hosting facility aims to set new standards for businesses across British Isles

by isleofman.com 13th October 2011

A NEW facility created by Wi-Manx at Heywood House Datacentre has opened for business with the aim of helping position the Isle of Man as one of the most sought-after hosting centres within the British Isles.

The multi-million pound facility was officially opened by Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood, following a reception at Portofino Restaurant in Douglas.

The Isle of Man datacentre features the latest generation of technology – including resilient power, high-density cooling systems, access control, high-speed connectivity options, full DDoS protection and the latest in server and storage systems.

David Stickland, Wi-Manx’s chief commercial officer, said, “We’re confident that the Heywood House Datacentre is the most modern hosting facility in the Island. We’ve invested a significant amount of time and resources and we’re already seeing strong interest from established Manx businesses, and businesses looking to relocate to, or be hosted in, the Isle of Man.”

Wi-Manx was set up in 2004 by Edward Whipp and now employs a team of 13 staff including specialists in wireless, VoIP, telecommunications, security and phone systems to ensure capability, security and reliability as the infrastructure is developed and maintained.

Mr Whipp said, “We are enormously proud to be playing our part in helping position the Isle of Man as a pioneering jurisdiction and we shall continue to invest in new technology.”

The range of network and hosting solutions includes cloud hosting, colocation, voice servers and dedicated servers, while its managed services include security, load balancing, storage solutions and high performance network solutions.

“Research shows that the datacentre business is a growth sector, with an increasing number of businesses using outsourced datacentre facilities," said David Stickland. “The benefits to the Isle of Man of such growth are obvious, as we hope to attract global brand names and create local jobs to sustain this growth in the industry.

“Wi-Manx is a strong player in this field. We have already identified several new growth markets which we are actively pursuing, which will also see us exhibiting at leading industry events around Europe.

“This has led to delegates from these industries arranging visits to the Island to meet us, view the facility and discuss how they can move aspects of their hosting operations to the Island.”
