Island's incinerator shortlisted for energy award

by isleofman.com 28th September 2011

THE Island's incinerator has been shortlisted for an accolade at the Renewable Energy Infrastructure Awards.

It has been shortlisted alongside several other energy from waste facilities across Britain in the Energy from Waste Facility of the Year category.

The incinerator is owned by the Department of Infrastructure and managed by SITA Isle of Man. It processes all of the Island's residual domestic and commercial waste and produces approximately seven per cent of the Island's electricity.

So far the incinerator has won several awards including the PEEL People's Cup from the Chartered Institute of Waste Management and it also played a leading role in SITA achieving recognition in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies league table.

Tim Otley, head of energy solutions at SITA UK, said: "We are delighted that the SITA operated facility at Richmond Hill has been recognised by the judges and look forward to seeing if we are able to add to the credentials already placed on this award-winning renewable energy-from-waste site."

Graham Cregeen, political member for the Department of Infrastructure, said: "The short listing of the energy from waste plant demonstrates the contribution the energy from waste plant will make towards government's target of 15 per cent renewable energy by 2015.

"The plant compliments the recycling efforts undertaken on Island whilst enabling it to move away from landfill. The Island should be extremely proud to be shortlisted for its third major award after the plant scooped the coveted CIWM Peel Peoples Cup."

The Renewable Energy Infrastructure Awards take place on Thursday, November 10, in London.
