General Election - Ramsey : Meet the candidates

THE constituency of Ramsey is located in the north of the Island. It has 5154 constituents and two seats.

 

Six people are standing for election in Ramsey. They are Allan Bell, Anne Craine, Lawrie Hooper, Linda Bowers-Kasch, John McDonough and Leonard Singer.

 

Here is a closer look at the candidates:

 


Allan Bell – Sitting Member

 

Sitting Member Allan Bell will stand for re-election in Ramsey as an independent candidate.

 

He has represented the constituency of Ramsey since 1984 and is the current Minister of the Department of Economic Development.

 

During his political career he has also served as the Treasury Minister and Minister for the Department's of Home Affairs and Trade and Industry.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for re-election he said: "I have had unique experience in helping lead our Island through troubled times. This experience will be invaluable not just to face the threats ahead but to turn those threats into opportunities."

 

On a national level his priorities include the economy, training and the youth population, planning tax and benefit reform. At constituency level his priorities include further regeneration of Ramsey, redevelopment of the MER station and the construction of a marina..

 


Anne Craine – Sitting Member

 

Sitting Member Anne Craine will stand for re-election in Ramsey as an independent candidate.

 

She has represented the constituency of Ramsey since 2003 and is the current Treasury Minister.

 

During her political career she has also served as the Minister of the Department of Education and on a number of committees. 

 

Speaking about standing for re-election she said: "It has been said many times that the next five years present us with more difficulties than have been experienced over the last 25 years. This is undoubtedly true. The next government will have to look over a longer horizon than five years to address the serious issues that will face future generations. We have a responsibility to start addressing those issues now."

 

On a national level her priorities include economic growth, housing, education, employment and immigration and MHK pensions and pay. At constituency level her priorities include the refurbishment of the Queen's Pier, marina, and sheltered housing.

 

 
Lawrie Hooper - Challenger

 

Lawrie Hooper is the youngest candidate standing for election at the age of 24.

 

He is standing as an independent candidate for Ramsey and currently works at an accountancy firm in Douglas.

 

Speaking about his decision to stand for election Lawrie said: "Over the past few years I have been repeatedly disappointed with the way that our current government has been handling itself and this is what has made me seek election on September 29."

 

On a national level his priorities include government spending, tax, review of local authorities and more communication from government. At constituency level his priorities include further investment in Ramsey, renovation of the Queen's Pier and the construction of a marina.

 

 

Linda Bowers-Kasch - Challenger

 

Linda Bowers-Kasch is standing for election in Ramsey as a Liberal Vannin candidate.

 

She is an ex-vice president of Barclay's Wealth and is a current member of the Isle of Man Employment Tribunal and the Institute of Directors.

 

Speaking about standing for election she said: "The Isle of Man provided me with opportunities to succeed, grow and build skills and experience. It is now time to give back. Along with my commitment and passion for a great future for the Isle of Man I am significantly equipped to serve Ramsey and the Island well at both local and global levels."

 

The Liberal Vannin Party's priorities include the Freedom of Information Act, the economy, health and social care and a military covenant.

 


John McDonough - Challenger


John McDonough, a civil servant, is standing for election in Ramsey as an independent candidate.

 

Speaking about standing for election in Ramsey John said: "I stood unsuccessfully for Ramsey Commissioners at the last local election and since then I have become more focussed on the issues that are currently affecting us locally as a town, nationally as an Island and globally."

 

On a national level his priorities include healthcare, education, and attracting investors from the UK, Europe and further abroad. At constituency level his priorities include getting people to shop locally.

 

 

Leonard Singer

 

Leonard Singer, a current member of Ramsey Town Commissioners, is standing for election in Ramsey as an independent candidate.

 

He has previously represented Ramsey as an MHK from 1995 to 2003 and as an MLC from 2003 to 2006.

 

Speaking about standing for election he said: "I have never flinched from speaking up for the people of Ramsey and, when necessary, will step on 'political toes' and ask the difficult questions to express your concerns. My priority has been – and always will be – to support the people and the town of Ramsey."

 

On a national level his priorities include health, Freedom of Information Act, off island travel and scrutiny in government. At a constituency level his priorities include the marina project, planning, public sector housing and further regeneration.

 

 

The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 29. 64 candidates are standing in the House of Keys election with 24 seats spread over the 15 constituencies. isleofman.com will bring you the election results as they happen on Thursday.
