General Election - Peel: Meet the candidates

THE constituency of Peel in the west of the Island has 2970 constituents and one seat.

 

Five candidates are standing for election in Peel. They are Tim Crookall, Rodger Gimbert, Leslie Hanson, Raymond Harmer and Arran Kaighin.

 

Here is a closer look at the candidates:

 

 

Tim Crookall – Sitting Member

 

Sitting Member Tim Crookall is standing for re-election in Peel as an independent candidate.

 

He had represented the constituency since 2006 and is the current chairman of the Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority.

 

During his political career he has worked as a Political Member for the Department's of Transport, Home Affairs and Environment Food and Agriculture. He has also been on a number of standing and select committees.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for re-election he said: "The Manx Government and the Isle of Man is now in a period where it is going to be tested to the full. We need to be able to rely on experience, commitment and a determination from the public, private and third sectors working together for the betterment of the Isle of Man."

 

On a national level his priorities include policing, overseas aid, education and housing. At constituency level his priorities include traffic issues, the IRIS system and the relocation of government offices to Peel.

 

 

Rodger Gimbert – Challenger

 

Rodger Gimbert is standing for election in Peel as an independent candidate.

 

He is a Peel Commissioner and stood unsuccessfully for the seat in Peel in the 2006 general election.

 

Rodger is currently the chairman of the town's Chamber of Commerce.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing he election he said: "My reason is simple – it's time for change and time for Peel to have strong, decisive and dedicated representation in government."

 

On a national level his priorities include the Freedom of Information Act, economic development, promotion of Manx language and culture and investment in frontline services. At constituency level his priorities include parking, the IRIS strategy and social housing.

 


Leslie Hanson – Challenger

 

Leslie Hanson is standing for election in Peel as an independent candidate.

 

He is a dentist and owns and runs dental practices in Peel and Onchan.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for election he said: "This coming election will be the most important one for many years. The question the electorate must ask themselves is 'are the politicians who got us into this financial mess the best people to get us out of it?'"

 

On a national level his priorities include a full government audit, pensions, work permits and the BBC TV Licence. At constituency level his priorities include a passenger railway line between Douglas and Peel, another beach for Peel and more events in the town.

 


Raymond Harmer

 

Raymond Harmer is standing for election in Peel as an independent candidate.

 

He is a business analyst and was chairman of Peel Commissioners from May 2010 to May 2011.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for election he said: "I believe it is time for Peel to be heard and for Peel to play a key role of influence in the affairs of our nation. I wish to be a Member of the House of Keys to see the Isle of Man prosper under wise financial stewardship and for Peel to have the investment and representation it needs."

 

On a national level his priorities include the economy, tax strategy, education, health and policing and crime. At constituency level his priorities include better amenities and services, a blue flag for the beach and employment.  

 


Arran Kaighin

 

Arran Kaighin is standing for election in Peel as an independent candidate.

 

He owns a kitchen business and is also a retained firefighter.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for election he said: "This September the people of the Island have a choice. Due to failures and waste from the previous administration the next five years will be some of the most difficult faced in our recent history. It is time to stop the rot."

 

On a national level his priorities include the relationship with the UK Government and emphasis on Manx language and culture. At constituency level his priorities include a western sewerage treatment facility, improvement to the promenade and small industrial units for the area.

 

 

 

The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 29. 64 candidates are standing in the House of Keys election with 24 seats spread over the 15 constituencies. isleofman.com will bring you the election results as they happen on Thursday.
