General Election - Middle: Meet the candidates

THE constituency of Middle is made up of the parishes of Braddan and Marown and includes the Spring Valley Industrial Estate and the Ballacottier Business Park.

 

It has 3345 constituents and one seat.

 

Four candidates are standing for election in Middle. They are Juan Cottier, Paul Craine, Howard Quayle and Martyn Quayle. 

 

Here is a closer look at the candidates:

 


Juan Cottier – Challenger

 

Juan Cottier is standing for election in Middle as a Liberal Vannin Party candidate.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for election he said: "I want to make a difference to the Island and by being part of a team that gets this House of Keys working for the betterment of the Isle of Man."

 

On a national level his priorities include government finances, Freedom of Information Act and the Disability Discrimination Act. At constituency level his priorities include traffic calming, recreation facilities and planning.

 

 

Paul Craine – Challenger

 

Paul Craine is a Malew commissioner and is standing for election in Middle as an independent candidate.

 

He has resigned from his position as the co-ordinating advisor for 11-19 education at the Department of Education as a result of standing for election.

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for election he said: "I believe that we need MHKs who prioritise good, caring constituency work and are proactive and reliable in responding to local needs. I have no political ambitions of my own other than to contribute to the future development of the Isle of Man and to serve as a highly effective Member of the House of Keys for Middle."

 

On a national level his priorities include the economy, government income, education, farming and housing. At constituency level his priorities include the Eastern Area Plan, transport and traffic and recreation facilities.

 

 

Howard Quayle – Challenger

 

Howard Quayle, the former president of the Manx National Farmers' Union, is standing for the election in Middle as an independent candidate.

 

Speaking about standing his reasons for standing for election Howard said: "As an experienced businessman I believe I can help to steer the Island through the stormy waters we find ourselves in."

 

On a national level his priorities include education, health, the economy, pensions and internal relations and government structure. At constituency level his priorities include supporting local businesses, community policing, the Eastern Area Plan and housing.

 


Martyn Quayle – Sitting Member

 

Sitting member Martyn Quayle is standing for re-election in Middle as an independent candidate.

 

He was elected as an MHK for Middle in 2001 and is the current Minister of the Department of Social Care.

 

During his political career he has also held the position of Minister in the Department's of Home Affairs and Tourism and Leisure. 

 

Speaking about his reasons for standing for re-election he said: "I have always had a keen interest in Manx, British and world politics for as long as I can remember and have had a life-long association with Braddan and Marown parishes and a burning desire to make a contribution to the Island and its people."

 

On a national level his priorities include the economy, the scope and structure of government, the ageing population and education. At constituency level his priorities include traffic and speeding, the Eastern Area Plan and the IRIS scheme.

 

 

 

The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 29. 64 candidates are standing in the House of Keys election with 24 seats spread over the 15 constituencies. isleofman.com will bring you the election results as they happen on Thursday.
