General Election - Douglas South: Meet the candidates

DOUGLAS South is one of four Douglas constituencies and has 4372 constituents and two seats.

 

The area includes Pulrose, Spring Valley and the Anagh Coar local authority estates and the residential areas at Ballaughton and Farmhill.

 

The NSC and Douglas Golf Course and the industrial area on Peel Road are also located within the constituency. 

 

Three candidates are standing for election in Douglas South. They are Kate Beecroft, David Cretney and Bill Malarkey.

 

Here is a closer look at the candidates:

 


Kate Beecroft – Challenger

 

Braddan Commissioner Kate Beecroft is standing as a Liberal Vannin Party candidate for Douglas South.

 

Speaking about standing for the election she said: "As part of the Liberal Vannin team I look forward to working hard to overcome the difficulties that the Island will be facing and bringing about a more positive future for all."

 

On a national level her priorities include health care and the elderly and disabled communities. At constituency level Kate said priorities would be "subject to change" but include better facilities for young people and speeding. 

 


David Cretney - Sitting Member

 

David Cretney is a sitting member of Douglas South will stand for re-election as a candidate for the Manx Labour Party.

 

He was first elected into the Douglas South constituency in a by-election in 1985 and has represented the area ever since.

 

During his political career David has held the positions of Minister for Tourism and Minister of Trade and Industry. He is currently the Minister for the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure.

 

Speaking about his decision to stand for re-election he said: "I offer you experience, common sense, honesty and hard working dedication - essential qualities needed to face the challenges of the next five years."

 

On a national level his priorities include a more efficient government, health services and education. At constituency level his priorities include housing, traffic issues and leisure opportunities for young people.

 

 

Bill Malarkey – Sitting Member


Bill Malarkey is a sitting member of Douglas South and will stand for re-election as an independent candidate.

 

He has lived in the Isle of Man for his whole life and in south Douglas for the last 17 years.

 

During his political career he has been a Political Member for the Department of Home Affairs and Department of Social Care. He has also sat on many Tynwald committees.

 

Speaking about why he is standing for re-election he said: "I am passionate about doing everything I can to protect and expand the many unique benefits we all enjoy on our beautiful Island."

 

On a national level his priorities include the economy, scope of government, health, social care and law and order. At constituency level his priorities include traffic concerns, planning applications and regeneration.

 

 

  

The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 29. 64 candidates are standing in the House of Keys election with 24 seats spread over the 15 constituencies. isleofman.com will bring you the election results as they happen on Thursday.
