General Election - Douglas East: Meet the candidates

DOUGLAS East is one of four Douglas constituencies and has 3035 constituents and two seats.  

  

Six candidates in total are standing in Douglas East. They are Brenda Cannell, John Karran, Richard Kissack, Paul Moulton, Geraldine O'Neill and Chris Robertshaw.

 

Here is a closer look at the candidates:

 

 

Brenda Cannell – Sitting Member

 

Brenda Cannell has been an MHK for Douglas East since 1996. She is hoping to retain her seat as an independent candidate.

 

During her political career she has been a Political Member for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure. She has also served on a number of committees.

 

She says she is standing for re-election to continue to provide constituents with "a strong voice in the House of Keys and Tynwald Court".

 

On a national level her priorities include developing a national tax strategy, health and education services and pursuing package deals with air and sea operators to offer specialist holidays to the Island. At constituency level her priorities are to be available and approachable to all constituents.

 


John Karran – Challenger

 

John Karran, a chef, is standing as an independent candidate for Douglas East.

 

Stating his reason for standing for election he said: "I believe that I am better than the incumbents. I'm open and believe that honesty is the best policy."

 

On a national level his priorities include creating and protecting jobs in the private sector and an enquiry into the past government's handling of the economy. At constituency level his priorities include parking, shopping areas, facilities for children and local health and education facilities.

 

 

Richard Kissack – Challenger

 

Richard Kissack, a chartered certified accountant, is standing as an independent candidate for Douglas East.

 

He runs a recruitment business in Douglas and is also in favour of some Liberal Vannin Party ideas.

 

Richard was elected as a Douglas councillor in 2008 and has served on various committees since.

 

He wants to be elected because he is "passionate about doing the right thing" and believes this is a "critical time for the Island where we need real politicians with vision and strength of character".

 

On a national level his priorities include keeping the BBC licence fee money, building relationships with Nordic countries and a Freedom of Information Act. At constituency level his priorities include redevelopment of the Douglas Promenades and attention on derelict properties in the town.

 


Paul Moulton – Challenger

 

Paul Moulton, former correspondent for ITV Granada, is standing as an independent candidate in Douglas East.

 

He believes 35 years of working in the media has given him a good insight into the challenges faced and says he is standing because "hindsight is a wonderful thing but we now need to focus on how to bring the economy back on track".

 

On a national level his priorities include retaining quality of live, pensions, education and healthcare. At constituency level his priorities include redevelopment of the bus station, the Summerland site and regeneration in the town.

 


Geraldine O'Neill – Challenger

 

Geraldine O'Neill, a teacher at St Ninian's High School, is standing as an independent candidate for Douglas East.

 

Giving her reasons for standing she said: "As a Manx person I want to safeguard and promote our unique culture and identity for future generations."

 

On a national level her priorities include investment in education and health provision and renewable energy. At constituency level her priorities include affordable housing, proper maintenance of the IRIS system and making the town more attractive. Internationally she believes the Island must expand cultural tourism and increase bilateral relations beyond the UK.

 

 

Chris Robertshaw – Sitting Member

 

Chris Robertshaw has been an MHK for Douglas East since 2010 following a by-election. He is hoping to retain his seat as an independent candidate.

 

During his time in politics he has served on four select committees.

 

He says he wants to be re-elected because "Douglas East is the most important constituency in the Isle of Man and I would not wish to stand anywhere else".

 

On a national level his priorities include growing the economy, rebalancing government, education, health and social care. At constituency level his priorities include encouraging development in Douglas, parking and setting up a housing association.

 

 

The Isle of Man will go to the polls on Thursday, September 29. 64 candidates are standing in the House of Keys election with 24 seats spread over the 15 constituencies. isleofman.com will bring you the election results as they happen on Thursday.
