MANX Grand Prix organisers are planning to retain the format of the racing programme for 2012, according to a statement issued today.
The Manx Motor Cycle Club (MMCC) said that the 10 per cent increase in visiting fans and the ever increasing number of newcomers to the racing were strong signals that the MGP was evidence of the popularity of the event.
It’s believed that many of the new visitors to the Manx Grand Prix were previously those who attended the TT which has also seen a revival in popularity in recent years. It’s also known that a large number of biking fans attend both events.
Today’s MMCC statement said, “The Manx Motor Cycle Club would like to thank all those who helped make the 2011 Manx Grand Prix a successful event, including marshals, officials, government departments, and most importantly, the riders who gave us some thrilling racing.
“The MMCC recognises the commitment of riders, who despite the difficult economic conditions, make the Manx Grand Prix the focal point of their racing season.”
The club said that the newcomers’ race had received the largest entry for many years - 55 - which was largely due to the efforts of the Mike Hailwood Foundation who brought riders to the Island during the winter months.
Despite the Classic racing classes showing only marginal increases, the MMCC said that it was “committed” to promoting the same events for the 2012 programme.
The statement added, “ Whilst the MMCC welcomes and acknowledges the significant contribution of the Classic and Post Classic races to the event, the Senior, Junior, Lightweight and Super Twins will remain at its heart.”
