Island physiotherapists praised for helping hands during Commonwealth Youth Games

by isleofman.com 20th September 2011

A NUMBER of Island physiotherapists have been praised for playing their part in this year's Commonwealth Youth Games.

20 physiotherapists, including staff from the Department of Health, private physiotherapists, sports therapists and masseurs, helped provide athletes from around the world with care during the sporting event.

Of the 20 physiotherapists 11 were from Noble's Hospital. They were led by Ruth Cooil, a clinical specialist in physiotherapy, who was the Isle of Man team physiotherapist at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 and in Delhi in 2010.

She said: "Our team of 11 physiotherapists from Noble's Hospital were very keen to seize the opportunity to work at a high level sporting event.

"We provided a physiotherapist at a number of venues to deal with onsite injuries and provide pre and post event treatments to all competing nations.

"These competitors are the future talent of the Commonwealth and it's rewarding to be a small part of what will for some be a glittering sporting career.

"The department and management at Noble's Hospital have been very supportive in allowing the physiotherapists to volunteer for the games which was greatly appreciated."

Health Minister David Anderson said: "I'd like to extend my thanks not only to our physiotherapists from Noble's Hospital who volunteered for the games but to everyone across the Department of Health and our Island community who so willingly gave their time. The games simply wouldn't have been possible without this groundswell of public support.

"Having competed in the Commonwealth Games I know how important, and welcome, support from physiotherapists is for all of the different sporting disciplines.  The team did an excellent job doing the Island proud – so a very well done."

The Commonwealth Youth Games took place in the Isle of Man between September 7 and September 13. To look back at the event click here.
