A DOCUMENTARY about a group of handicapped street musicians will be shown as part of the Films in Peel programme.
Benda Bilili! follows a group of homeless paraplegics and three able bodied men from the streets of the Congo to many music festivals around Europe.
The documentary, which took five years to make, was created by filmmakers Renaud Barret and Florent de la Tullaye after they met the leader of the band Staff Benda Bilili in Kinshasa.
They were so enchanted by their music that they decided to help the group make a recording. This turned into a film about human resilience, determination and creativity.
Film critic Mark Kermode described the film as: "One of the most moving and engaging music documentaries I can remember seeing...it's not a music doc, it’s not a rock doc...It’s something else!"
Benda Bilili! will be screened on Wednesday, September 28, at the Centenary Centre in Peel. It is PG rated but is subtitled as it is in French and Lingala.
The film starts at 7.45pm. Doors open at 7.15pm. Tickets cost £4 or £3 for concessions. They are available from Celtic Gold in Peel, Shakti Man in Ramsey, Mostly Manx in Douglas, and Thompson Travel in Port Erin. Unsold tickets will be available on the door.
