THE Office of Fair Trading has issued a warning to residents and retailers in the Isle of Man over the dangers of using and selling extra large lighters.
It says it is aware that there are a number of retailers selling the lighters, which are considerably bigger than normal lighters, but says they are dangerous.
Tests conducted on the lighters, which are often described as xxl, giant, king-size and jumbo, have revealed a number of safety concerns and those who have bought them are asked to stop using them immediately.
Peter Killey, sub officer for the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service’s community safety team, said: "There is clearly a large amount of fuel in these lighters which could potentially cause a serious fire if used inappropriately.
"We would urge anybody who own one of these extra large lighters to stop using it immediately and contact the Office of Fair Trading for further advice.
"Extra large lighters should not be disposed of in the domestic waste and they should be kept away from children at all times.
"Whilst there have been no reports of any incidents on the Island we are aware that there have been a number of incidents reported to us by our colleagues in the UK where children have received serious burns to their hands."
A number of retailers have already volunteered to stop selling the extra large lighters after being contacted by Trading Standards. Those who are still stocking them are asked to call the Office of Fair Trading as a matter of urgency on 01624 686526. The Office has warned that if retailers do not heed its advice it will take appropriate enforcement action.
