THE Isle of Man branch of the Samaritans is appealing for members of the public to join the charity as volunteers.
It says everyone has it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer and is looking for those people with a few hours to spare per week.
Samaritans offer round the clock emotional support for anyone feeling down, depressed, anxious or unhappy. The service is confidential and can be conducted by telephone, e-mail, text, letter or face to face.
The charity currently has 70 volunteers on its books but says it is always looking for more to ensure it can continue to offer the service to the community.
Branch director Sylvia Hall said: "There are a wide range of roles available to suit people with different skills - from taking calls to our helpline, to providing administrative and IT support or organising fundraising activities for the branch.
"By working together to support people struggling to cope, our branch is a rewarding place to spend your time - as not only do we offer expert training but there are plenty of social activities too."
Adrian, who is a new volunteer, said: "Choosing to volunteer with Samaritans was one of the best decisions I ever made. I received extensive training, ongoing support and really valued having a mentor to guide me.
"It's an amazing opportunity for personal development and growth too as you discover things about yourself, as a Samaritan, that you weren't previously aware of."
The Samaritans are holding an information evening for new volunteers on Monday, September 12, at 7pm at St Andrews Church Hall in Douglas. For more information telephone Adrian Christian on 07624 334900 or e-mail aschristian@manx.net.
