Exposure to asbestos led to man's death

by isleofman.com 6th September 2011

A 79-year-old Port St Mary man died from industrial disease, an inquest heard this afternoon (Tuesday).

Thomas Duffy, a retired painter and decorator, died of respiratory failure in Noble's Hospital, in May.

A post mortem examination showed he had been exposed to very high levels of asbestos fibres over the course of his career.

The inquest heard Mr Duffy was born in Glasgow, but had lived on the Island since the early 1980s.

He had a varied career, including a time working at Clydebank shipyard in the 1950s and 60s.

Evidence showed he had been a healthy man up until three years ago, when he began experiencing chest problems.

He was eventually diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma last year and his health deteriorated.

A verdict of death through industrial disease was recorded.
