A would-be candidate says he was devastated when he had to pull out of the general election.

Martin Moore, who intended to contest the two-seat constituency of West Douglas, failed to gather enough valid signatures on his nomination form.

He says delays in getting an electoral register meant he couldn't check the details of those who had backed his bid and when, on nomination day, the returning officer told him two of his signatures weren't valid, he was forced to stand down.

The General Registry has told Manx Radio it is looking into the alleged delay in supplying a copy of the electoral register.

Mr Moore's withdrawal has left four candidates in West Douglas, namely Geoff Corkish, John Shimmin, John Skinner and Chris Thomas.

Polling day is Thursday, September 29.
