Manx double at the Manx Grand Prix

by isleofman.com 31st August 2011

THERE was a double Manx victory at the Manx Grand Prix today when both races this afternoon were won by Isle of Man riders.

Dave Moffit, 44, from Douglas won the first ever Supertwin race and Billy Smith from Willaston won the Lightweight race in an event which had an extra Manx connection when Conor Cummins was given the honour of flagging away the riders which included his own dad Billy Cummins on a 650 Suzuki.

In addition, the race was sponsored - for the first time - by Manx Radio, making it very much an all-Manx affair with racing broadcaster Chris Kinley presenting the Lightweight awards and managing director Anthony Pugh presenting the Supertwin awards.

The Manx National anthem rang out twice over the Grandstand to salute the two riders who battled in tricky conditions with damp patches in many places and showers of rain falling throughout the four laps, making it very wet in some parts, especially on the mountain section.

Dave Moffitt said, “I could never have believed it would turn out this way - this is fantastic.” Billy Smith said, “It wasn’t easy and the road was very wet in some parts. I had a few slides on the mountain, so I backed off a bit. But it turned out well.”

RESULTS:

Supertwin:

1)  Dave Moffitt (645 Suzuki)

2)  Joe Phillips (650 Yamaha)

3)  Phil Harvey (250 Yamaha)

Lightweight:

1)  Billy Smith (400 Yamaha)

2)  Alistair Howarth  (400 Honda)

3)  Ross Johnson (400 Kawasaki)

Fastest lap of the day: Dave Moffitt (109.547mph).
