Stobart in Manx flights battle

by isleofman.com 30th August 2011

The United Kingdom's best-known haulage company is fighting a planning battle which could see it start passenger flights to the Isle of Man.

The Stobart Group is battling to create a huge freight terminal at Carlisle Airport as well as resurfacing the runways.

However, consultants for Carlisle City Council say running passenger flights and air freight from the airport wouldn't be viable, a claim the company disputes.

It argues Carlisle could handle up to 165,000 passengers each year by 2025.

The earliest the application can go before councillors is September 30.

Currently, there are 100 letters and emails, as well as six petitions in support of the plans, with 67 objections and one petition against.
