GEOFF Corkish has rejected claims that he tried to stop music being played at the NSC at the weekend during the Cancer Research ‘Relay for Life’.
The website Manx Forums alleged that Mr Corkish, who will be defending his seat as MHK for Douglas West in the General Election, had told the relay organisers to turn the music off, but this was denied by Mr Corkish today.
“I asked organisers to ‘turn down the music a bit’ because of complaints from some people living in Ballabrooie,” he said.
Mr Corkish, a frequent volunteer supporter of a number of local charities and well known as a compere and singer, was part of the entertainment for the hundreds of walkers taking part in the Cancer Research ‘Relay for Life’ on Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by Celton Manx.
The event has so far raised more than £21,000 for the charity and was given major media publicity over the weekend by radio station 3FM and isleofman.com.
Mr Corkish added, “There was no slight intended. I am chairman of the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association and supporter of Relay for Life. I lost my own mother to cancer two years ago.
“All I did was ask the organisers to turn the music down during the night so that people living nearby weren’t disturbed.”
