THE early figures for the money raised at the Cancer Research ‘Relay for Life’ at the NSC this weekend show that more than £21,000 has already been raised by the hundreds of walkers who joined in the 24-hour marathon.
The announcement was made at lunchtime today at the end of the relay which has been generously sponsored by Celton Manx.
Coping with heavy intermittent showers throughout a cold night, the walkers completed their 24-hour endurance event with lots of blisters and tired legs - but also with lots of smiles.
It’s the second year that the relay has been held and it again proved a huge success for Cancer Research who said afterwards they were “delighted” with the funds raised so far.
Team awards - for the teams raising the most money so far - were also announced at the end of the event with “The Clinic Chicks" collecting more than £2,800.
The event organisers also paid tribute to the sponsors at the conclusion of today’s walk, with special mention made of the “fantastic generosity of Celton Manx and managing director Bill Mummery” as the headline sponsors.
Individual mention was also made of a number of other sponsors who gave valuable support to the event - 3FM as media partner, the NSC and staff, A3 Island marquees, Words & Spaces (programme printing), Red Scaffolding (stage erection), Jabberwocky Drawing Room (catering), Pokerstars, Isle of Man Advertising, WDS, Lynsey Radcliffe, Dot Tilbury, Geoff Corkish MHK, The Mayor of Douglas Ritchie McNicholl, John Caley, Heron & Brearley, David Pendelbury, Callan & Jay, Shoprite, Quest Landscapes, Ellan Vannin Pipes & Drums, D’s Leisure, Liverpool Arms, Onchan Rotary Club, Apple Orphanage, Virtuscope, The Original Manx Fudge Company, Molton Brown, Isle of Man Film Commission, Hilary Leece & Family, Ashley Burgess, Quarterbridge pub, Isle of Man Newspapers, D & D’s mobile DJs, Alliance & Leicester and Dave, Nigel and Brian - in memory of Tom Wiseman.
