STEAM Packet crew have been praised for their fast reactions after fire broke out in the kitchens on the Steam Packet ferry Ben my Chree today.
Parts of the boat filled up with smoke after a fire started as the ship was travelling from Heysham to Douglas.
A chip pan had ignited in one of the vessel’s kitchens but the ship’s crew acted quickly and the fire was extinguished before it was able to spread further.
Despite the disruption, the ship arrived in Douglas on schedule.
Fire crews from Douglas Fire Station attended the vessel after it arrived in Douglas harbour, to carry out a post fire inspection of the galley area. The fire was confined to the kitchen’s grill range.
Two members of the ship’s crew were taken to Nobles Hospital for a routine check up suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
A spokesman for the Fire Service said afterwards, “We would like to take the opportunity to praise the actions of the ship’s crew in preventing this incident from developing any further.”
