A FORMER Manx Grand Prix winner has died following an incident in last night's qualifying session.
Neil Kent, 49, from Boston, Lincolnshire, was involved in an incident at Greeba Castle while practising on his 250cc Yamaha in the Junior session which started just after 6.20pm.
He was an experienced competitor who had been racing in the Manx Grand Prix since 1986. Last year he won the Lightweight race – his first victory on the Mountain Course.
Neil was also awarded the John Goodall 'Spirit of the Manx' award which was created to recognise sportsmanship, endeavour and commitment.
Bill Bennett, chairman of the Manx Motor Cycle Club, said: "Neil was an enormously popular competitor at the Manx Grand Prix and his victory after almost 25 years of racing in the meeting was well deserved. He was also a hugely appropriate choice for last year's John Goodall 'Spirit of the Manx' award. He will be sorely missed."
Neil was single and his next of kin have been informed. The Manx Motor Cycle Club has extended its deepest sympathy to his friends and family.
