A SOCIAL event to mark the start of the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra's season takes place at the Garrison wine bar in Castletown next week.
The gathering, at 7.30pm on Thursday, September 1, is open to musicians, friends, supporters and people who would like to join the orchestra.
This coming season will be the orchestra's 15th of rehearsals, concerts and events.
The orchestra's plans for the new season include a series of concerts in the Island, a performance at Shrewsbury School in December and a celebration of Wind Orchestra music in February led by Colin Touchin.
Colin is a leading composer and conductor and he has been commissioned by the orchestra to compose a piece based on Manx themes which will have its world premiere in the Island on February 2012.
The composition is supported by the Manx Heritage Foundation.
Chairman of the orchestra Michael Morrison said: "The members of the orchestra come from a wide variety of backgrounds and ages, they come together for the enjoyment of making music.
"While we take our performances seriously we do ensure that we have fun at the same time."
The Orchestra has 40 members and welcomes people who are playing or who have played woodwind, brass instruments or percussion.
The type of music played by the Wind Orchestra includes British light music, music from shows, military music, classics and contemporary pieces.
Musical director Paul Dunderdale said: "The type of music we play strikes a good balance between music that is enjoyable to play and music that is enjoyable to listen to."
Anyone who wants to know more about the orchestra can attend the social event and rehearsals will start on Thursday, September 9 at Marown School starting at 7.45pm and will continue each week during term time.
