Scottish Widows staff go hungry to help drought victims

by isleofman.com 23rd August 2011

STAFF at Scottish Widows have raised £2,000 for the Save the Children East Africa appeal by taking part in a 24 hour fast.

Nine people took part in the fundraising effort which was organised by senior account executive Andrew England.

He said: "No one could fail but be moved by the plight of the millions facing starvation in East Africa caused by extreme drought conditions.

"In response we felt the very least we could do would be to offer support through a sponsored fast. For my part I'd definitely do it again - perhaps even pushing the fasting to 36 or 48 hours.

"For us in the developed world the scale of the devastation in East Africa is impossible to comprehend however we were encouraged to learn that using Save the Children pricing indices the £2,000 we've raised means we've provided clean drinking water for 106,666 people - more than the population of the Isle of Man."

Juan Clarke, the senior manager at Scottish Widows, said: "Clearly the disaster in East Africa demands a humanitarian response of epic proportions. We were therefore pleased to offer our support to Andrew and his colleagues whose selfless actions and willingness to help those less fortunate are to be applauded and epitomise Scottish Widows' 'Great Place to Work' ethos."

Andrew also thanked colleagues who he described as "extraordinarily generous" and the Lloyds Banking Group, the parent company of Scottish Widows, who matched their fundraising efforts taking the total to £2,000.
