A CANDIDATE standing for Rushen in this year's election is using social media to interact with voters.
Laurence Skelly is holding an 'Election Open House' on Facebook and Twitter tomorrow (Sunday) to answer any questions that his potential constituents, and non constituents, may have.
People will be able to write questions to Laurence on his Facebook Page or 'Tweet' them to him about any issues or concerns they have before the General Election on September 29.
Laurence explained: "I'm holding the event to allow those with busy lifestyles and the younger voters an opportunity to interact with a candidate in an informal environment. Being able to connect to the people in this way gives a new dimension of hearing views and understanding concerns and aspirations for me the candidate.
"I believe social media is a powerful tool to connect with the ever mobile public and for an election campaign it's vastly important. On one occasion someone knew I was in the area and stayed in to catch me as I posted my movements on social media. Communication is paramount for anyone political - even Barrack Obama tweets."
Questions can be submitted publicly or privately and Laurence will respond directly on the night.
Laurence continued: "I have no idea what questions people will ask. In my view it's no different than being on the door step - anything and everything could be asked.
"However one question I have been asked by several students is about how/where they can vote when back at uni - Facebook or Tweet me to find out the answer! One hope I have is that this may remove some voter apathy."
The Election Open House will take place tomorrow evening (Sunday) from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. For links to Laurence's Facebook and Twitter sites visit www.voteskelly.com.
