INFRASTRUCTURE workers who are carrying out roadworks in Castletown and Douglas have been subjected to verbal abuse and threats.
That’s according to the Department of Infrastructure who has said it is "very concerned" about the "wholly unacceptable" abuse directed at staff who are working on the A5 and Victoria Road respectively.
Graham Cregeen, political member with responsibility for the Operations Division, said: "There has always been a small minority of people who have abused our workforce and unfortunately this trend seems to be increasing.
"It is totally unacceptable behaviour. These workers should not have to put up with this narrow minded aggression. People may be frustrated by delays to their journey but these employees are maintaining the Island's road infrastructure on their behalf.
"If somebody feels that they have a genuine grievance about what we are doing then they should direct their concerns to the department where they will be properly considered."
The department has also said some motorists are also putting people at risk by ignoring speed restrictions and traffic signals at the sites of the roadworks.
It will now trial mobile CCTV cameras at work sites to monitor vehicles passing through the roadworks and to ensure the safety of its workforce.
Inspector Terry Stephen of the Roads Policing Unit said: "I have arranged for an increased police presence in these areas but I sincerely hope that people will see reason and desist in this type of anti-social behaviour.
"If they persist then we will not hesitate to take enforcement action. The police are currently investigating two incidents where motorists have subjected Department of Infrastructure workers to abuse."
The department has said it recognises that roadworks can be disruptive but say they make every effort to minimise this. Anyone who has specific issues regarding to the roadworks can contact Gary Saunders on 01624 850048 to discuss these.
