Gymnastics sessions for disabled children to continue

by isleofman.com 8th August 2011

DISABLED children in the Isle of Man will be able to continue with gymnastics sessions in the new school year.

The sessions, which are open to primary and secondary school students with learning and/or physical disabilities, will now be included within the annual Disability School Sports Programme.

More than 80 children have already participated in the weekly sessions which are facilitated by Manx Sport and Recreation, the Island's Special Education Needs Units and the Ellan Vannin Gymnastics Club.

Community, Culture and Leisure Minister David Cretney MHK said: "It is important that children of all ages and abilities take part in physical exercise and this is a great initiative for children to participate in.

"Gymnastics is the perfect sport to encourage and engage children in a healthy lifestyle, and my department is extremely grateful to Barclays Wealth and IOM Sport for their ongoing support that makes it possible to extend our disability sports programme."

The gymnastics sessions can help children to develop physical and motor skills and can improve strength, endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, power and coordination.

For more information on the gymnastics sessions contact Zoe Carney the disability sports development officer on 01624 688575 or e-mail Zoe.Carney@gov.im.
