Former assessor told 'ARI must go'

by isleofman.com 8th August 2011

Treasury Minister Anne Craine says the Manx government will scrap a taxation measure deemed harmful by the EU Code of Conduct Group.

Anne Craine announced in the Budget in Spring the Attribution Regime for Individuals, or ARI, would be dropped from next April, to ensure the survival of the Island's Zero-ten corporate tax rate.

Now that decision is being questioned by former assessor of income tax Mark Solly, who held the post for nearly a decade from 1975.

He is calling on Tynwald members to put off the abolition of ARI, and for a new overarching tax strategy for the Island.

Mr Solly says abolishing ARI will favour wealthier members of society who place money in companies, but Mrs Craine says ARI must go, to ensure firms continue to be attracted to the Isle of Man:
