A NEW fire pump system for the Battery Pier oil and gas facilities is now operational.
The scheme consists of a new pump house containing three fire pumps located in the department's Battery Pier Yard near to the Fort Anne Jetty, ring main improvements and separate sea suctions.
It has been delivered within the £2.16m budget approved by Tynwald.
The water from the fire pumps will be used in the event of an incident to protect the oil and gas facilities in the Battery Pier area.
This includes the oil jetty and the Manx Petroleums and Manx Gas sites.
The scheme has been developed and constructed in close consultation with Manx Gas, Manx Petroleums, Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service and the Health and Safety Inspectorate.
The system has not yet been handed over to the Department of Infrastructure by the contractor as there are some minor items to be completed.
Member for Harbours David Callister MLC said: "Completion of this scheme has greatly improved the safety of the oil and gas facilities in Douglas and also improved the safety of people and property in the adjacent area.
"The new fire pumps have been designed to meet current standards that have been much increased as a result of the major explosion and fire that occurred in the UK at Buncefield in December 2005."
