'Sarah's Law may have prevented assault'

by isleofman.com 5th August 2011

North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson says a recent criminal case highlights the need for 'Sarah's Law' in the Isle of Man.

Nathan Lee Ryan Giles, aged 20, was jailed for twelve months for indecently assaulting an eight-year-old girl in her own home.

It emerged Giles was already on the sex offenders' register for an earlier incident in December 2010.

Last month, Mr Henderson presented a petition to Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw, calling for the introduction of Sarah's Law to the Isle of Man.

He says it could have helped prevent the assault (listen to audio file below):

Giles was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for ten years

'Sarah's Law' was named after nine-year-old Sarah Payne, who was abducted and murdered in Sussex, in the summer of 2000.

It aims to make it the legal right of every parent to know the identity of serious child sex offenders living in their communities.
