Call for more public debate on big issues

by isleofman.com 3rd August 2011

A general election candidate says the lack of freedom of information legislation in the Isle of Man is 'a tragedy'.

Andrew Newington-Bridges, who is contesting the single seat in Ayre, is calling for greater openness and transparency in government.

On Manx Radio's Mandate he told John Moss fewer decisions should be made behind closed doors (listen to audio file below):

After extensive consultation, a long-awaited freedom of information bill was given its first reading in the House of Keys at the end of June.

However, with no more sittings until after the general election, it will be up to the new House to decide whether the proposals become law.

Three people have so far declared their intention to contest the seat in Ayre, with Mr Newington-Bridges up against Pat Ayres and sitting member Eddie Teare.
