Nominations sought for Excellence Awards

by isleofman.com 2nd August 2011

NOMINATIONS for this year’s Awards for Excellence, promoted by Isle of Man Newspapers, are now being sought by the event organisers.

Entries will close at the end of September for the 16 categories covering companies and individuals in the public, private and charity sectors.

This year’s event, in association with RBSI, will culminate in a glittering prize presentation on November 17 at the Villa Marina.

Winning an award is seen as a strong and powerful recognition of a company’s achievement to work together and make a business successful. The honours are welcomed in many different ways by the companies and individuals.

Shane Martin, describing how he felt when the family business, Green Mann Spring, won the Conister Bank Award for the best Small Medium Enterprise, said, “Because we’ve worked so hard, we all felt that it was recognition for all our hard work.

“It was a massive pat on the back. It also helped us from a sales point of view because it was very reassuring for people to see that we had achieved this at such an early stage in the business.

“The process of entering also made us realise what we’d achieved. When you’re so busy all the time you don’t really forget, but when you sit down to fill in the entry forms it does really bring it to light when you have to put it down on paper.”

Cath Quilliam accepted the Thomas Miller Award for Corporate and Social Responsibility on behalf of the team at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital which has set up and run the Live Well Stay Well programme which offers self-management courses to help people with long-term health conditions.

She said, “It was a great way for the employed members of the team to recognise and celebrate the hard work of the volunteer team members.

“It has inspired the team to continue to develop the programme further, knowing that other people understand, recognise and care about what we are trying to achieve.

‘The night itself was a fantastic celebration of the excellent services and people that we have on the Isle of Man and it made me very proud to be part of that.’

Ann Clayton won the Sure Award for People Management and Development for her work on the Chartered Management Institute’s Manx Executive Challenge programme.

She said, “It was the icing on the cake of the eight years of tremendous pride and satisfaction I’d had chairing the Chartered Management Institute Manx Executive Challenge. I have seen so many great young managers blossom through the challenge to achieve their potential, with a significant number of them now holding senior positions on the Island.

“This was an award won by all those who have been involved in the challenge, since its creation in 1997, as everyone who contributed to its achievements did so on a voluntary basis.

“This year there was a record number of applications and the Chartered Management Institute in the UK is now looking at its potential for other regions.”

CVI Technical Optics manufactures components that were used in the Mars Pheonix Lander Probe. The company won the Microgaming Award for Innovation and Independent Thinking.

CVI managing director, Dr Helmut Kessler said, “Winning such an award is almost always the result of a strong team working together and this is most certainly true in the case of CVI Technical Optics Ltd.

“It also sets out the path for the future – for CVI Technical Optics Ltd this means to continue on the path of success to ensure that the company proves a worthy member of the select group of winners of the Isle of Man Newspapers’ Awards for Excellence.”
