TAXPAYERS will save £45,000 a year through a new streamlined process of applying for a disabled parking permit or bus pass in the Isle of Man.
Instead of visiting their doctor for an assessment, the government now accepts proof of receipt of social security benefits, making the process much simpler. The new system takes place with immediate effect.
For carer passes for the disabled bus pass scheme, a social work team will make the assessment.
"This is a positive example of the department adopting a more joined up and cohesive approach to meeting the needs of our community," said Bill Malarkey MHK.
To be eligible for a disabled bus pass of parking permit applicants must now be either registered blind or be receiving a disability allowance, attendance allowance, income support mobility premium, a war pension supplement or use a vehicle supplied by or adapted with a grant from social services.
Applicants can contact the Department of Social Care for more information.
