Mark Cavendish, the ‘Manx Missile’, is the toast of a nation this morning (Monday) after completing a lifelong dream by winning the Tour de France sprinters’ green jersey.
With 30 kilometres to go, Cavendish was by the side of the road, changing his bike as cool as a cucumber.
Half an hour later, he was on the Champs-Elysees rolling through the line, arms outstretched, grinning from ear to ear.
It marked his fifth stage win of this tour, the 20th of his career and completed a unique Parisian hat-trick as he won on the Champs-Elysees for the third consecutive year.
His coronation as the fastest sprinter on two wheels was confirmed as he clutched his green jersey.
And he admitted a change in the rules meant he had to ride flat out all the way to the finish.
