Indian money trail leads to Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 8th July 2011

India's Supreme Court has been told the Isle of Man was one of the destinations for bribe money in the country's mobile telephone scandal.

The country's Enforcement Directorate was giving an update on its investigation into allegations corrupt politicians made billions in bribes during the licensing process for mobile phone operators.

A panel of two judges in New Delhi heard more charges are expected to be laid against major players in the case in August.

The Enforcement Directorate said bribe money was routed to the Isle of Man, after a team from India's Central Bureau of Investigation spent time on the Island hunting evidence.

Authorities in India say tracing the ?3 billion of bribes has led to companies based in Mauritius, Switzerland and the British Virgin Islands.

The scandal has already led to one government minister being jailed and this week another has resigned after he was linked to the case.
