Very heavy rain during ceremony

by isleofman.com 5th July 2011

It was a day of firsts and lasts as the Isle of Man celebrated its national day on a damp morning at St John's.

As usual, the crowds flocked to the fair field, but after the recent glorious weather the heavens opened, and there was a spell of around half an hour of torrential rain.

Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood made his first appearance at the annual open air sitting of Tynwald, after being sworn in, earlier this year.

Meanwhile, it was Noel Cringle's final occasion as presiding officer of the court.

Also standing on the hill for the final time was Michael MHK David Cannan, who is retiring from politics at this year's general election.

Today (Tuesday), saw the promulgation by the deemsters of twelve acts which have been passed by the legislature during the past year, and around half a dozen petitions for redress of grievance were handed over by members of the public.

The Tynwald Honour was presented to former deemster Thomas William Cain, for his services to conservation.
